How to Calculate CEMENT, SAND Quantity for PLASTERING – Civil Engineering

Plaster:

Plaster is the mix proportion of sand and binding material (like lime or cement) used to finish the wall, making Molding & Cornish and Interior Exterior decoration finish purpose.

Generally cement plaster is used because of easy availability of cement and easily available of meson familiar with cement plaster.

Cement is considered as good binding material with low cost and easy availability.

Points should be remembered while calculating the quantity of cement, sand for plastering work

  1. For wall plastering, the ratio of Cement : Sand = 1 : 6

  2. For ceiling plastering, the ratio of Cement : Sand = 1 : 4

  3. Thickness of plaster varies according to type of work generally it is 6mm and 12-15mm.

  4. Use good quality of cement & Sand for plastering.

  5. Mix should be done with proper weight mixing or volume mixing.

Example

Cement and sand Required in Plaster

For 15mm thick cement plastering 1 : 6 on 100 sq.m. new brick work, the quantity of cement required is ?

Answer

We will calculate cement and sand for 100 m2 plastering area in 1:6 ratio and thickness of 15 mm.

Given that

  • Area = 100 m2
  • Ratio = 1 : 6
  • Thickness of Plaster = 15 mm

Volume of Material is = area*thickness

Volume = 100*0.015 m3

Volume = 1.5 m3

Note: Dry volume is approx 1.54 times more than wet volume, because 34-35% is bulking of sand and approx 20% is wastage of sand.

So the Original Dry Volume Required = 1.54*1.5 m3

Dry Volume = 2.31 m3

Quantity of Cement

Cement Quantity = ratio of cement in total volume

Cement Quantity = 1 of 7 portion of total volume

Cement Quantity = 1/7*2.31

Cement Quantity = 0.33 m3

Cement Quantity = 0.33*1440 Kg (Density of cement = 1440 kg per cubic metre)

Cement Quantity = 475.2 Kg

Cement Quantity = 9.50 Bags (One bag of cement have 50 Kg)

Quantity of Sand

Sand Quantity = Ratio of sand in total volume

Sand Quantity = 6 of 7 portion of total volume

Sand Quantity = 6/7*2.31

Sand Quantity = 1.98 m3

Sand Quantity = 1.98*1660 Kg (Density of sand = 1660 kg per cubic metre)

Sand Quantity = 3286.8 Kg

Cement Sand Required

Cement require = 9.50 bag

Sand Required = 33 Quintal
